Still/Live
Still/Live explores how contemporary artists working in photography, video and new media are reimagining the genre of still life. Since ancient times, deceptively simple depictions of fruit, flowers and everyday objects have disguised rich layers of symbolic association. The artists represented in Still/Live work from within the still life tradition, examining three themes – time, contemporary symbolism, and trompe l’oeil – with new technologies and from new perspectives.
The Rothko Room
Experience two more masterpieces in a room designed for individual reflection. Untitled, 1969 and Untitled (Still-life with Clock and Vase), 1938/1939 are the second and third in an ongoing series of works by Mark Rothko, presented by the KMA. Rothko envisioned the creation of spiritual single work “chapels” along the sides of highways throughout the country where weary travelers could stope and contemplate one of his paintings. This vision inspired the KMA’s The Rothko Room, which offers guests the opportunity to spiritually recharge in the presence of a single masterpiece, as Rothko intended.
Beatrice Scaccia: My Hope Chest
Beatrice Scaccia’s exhibition My Hope Chest, which includes a stop-motion animation and site-specific wall drawing, grew from her thoughts about a simple item of furniture: the hope chest. Hope chests were and still are used by unmarried young women to collect items such as clothing, and household linen in anticipation of married life. Scaccia uses the symbol of the hope chest to explore the social expectations that are placed upon women.
Welcome Back to the Katonah Museum of Art
We look forward to seeing you in our galleries again. To facilitate the safe return of visitors and staff to the Museum we are following guidelines established by New York Forward for Phase 4 reopening. Please note that some of our procedures have changed:
Admission and hours
- To create a contactless visitor experience and promote effective physical distancing, advance timed tickets will be required
- Katonah Museum of Art members will also need to obtain advance timed tickets, but there will be no charge.
- A limited number of tickets will be available for each time slot, in order to maintain social distancing.
- Please double check and make sure all tickets in your order are for the correct day and time slot before checking out..
- Complimentary admission passes will be honored, but advance timed reservations will be required, and pass must be presented upon entry to the Museum.
- To maximize your time in the galleries, we recommend arriving no later than 10 minutes after your scheduled start time so that you will be able to complete your visit to all of the galleries within your designated time slot.
- All transactions will be by credit or debit card, no cash will be accepted.
- All tours, including the daily 2:30 pm docent tour, are currently suspended.
- Our standard hours of operation remain the same.
- Visitors are required to adhere to the Visitor Code of Conduct (see below) and to follow Visitor Etiquette (see below).
- Please include Name, E-mail Address and Phone Number for all Attendees at check out. This information will be used for contact tracing.
- Upon checking out, please make sure to leave your browser open until you receive a confirmation that your order has been processed. If you do not receive this message or a confirmation e-mail, your order has not been processed.
Families
The KMA is happy to welcome families in a safe and fun way. When you sign up online for a time slot time to visit the KMA, add a reservation to the Learning Center for the same time block as your Museum tickets. A maximum of two families can work in the room at a time. One Learning Center reservation is good for a family of up to four, you do not need to make a reservation for each person in your group. This spring, dive deep into the genre of still life in our Learning Center’s interactive Still Life Studio. Learn about what makes a still life and why such an old art form continues to inspire contemporary artists. Discover an unexpected paper-built still life installation by artist Daniel Gordon. Objects will be available to set up your own still life arrangement with various art materials to create unique still life artworks. Upon your arrival at the Museum, young visitors will receive an interactive family guide and activity pack at the front desk which will lead them through the Still/Live exhibition in the galleries. The Museum and Learning Center will be cleaned between each group of visitors. Don’t forget the beauty of the Sculpture Garden where you can sit for a while at socially distanced tables and chairs and create your artwork outside. Members and children under 12 are always free. Masks are required for anyone over 2 years old.
Visitor Code of Conduct
By reserving your timed ticket, you agree to adhere to the Visitor Code of Conduct and to play your part in keeping the Museum safe for both visitors and staff. In order for your purchase to go through, you must check the Terms and Conditions box in the checkout window.
Health and Safety
- Indoors, masks are required for anyone who has not completed their COVID vaccination. Masks are optional for anyone two weeks past their final COVID vaccination.
- Outdoors, masks are optional for all.
- Hand sanitizer is available for your use when you enter the Museum and in the public areas.
- By purchasing tickets and entering the Museum, you are affirming that in the past 14 days you:
- Have not had symptoms of COVID-19 or a positive COVID-19 test.
- Have not been in close proximity to someone with confirmed or suspected COVID-19.
- Have not traveled to an area with an outbreak of COVID-19.
- The contact information you provided when purchasing your ticket will be used if we need to notify you of any COVID-19 exposure. Likewise, should you become ill with COVID-19 following your visit, please notify the Museum as soon as possible.
- Museum staff will be cleaning and disinfecting all high-touch surfaces regularly throughout the day.
Social Distancing
- Our capacity is reduced to 50 visitors per time slot.
- Please maintain six feet between yourself, other visitors, and Museum staff.
- The circulation through the Museum will be in one direction. Following your visit to the galleries, and weather permitting, you may exit through the Sculpture Garden, where you are welcome to sit and relax for the remainder of your time slot.
Liability
By reserving tickets, you confirm that you are aware that visiting the Katonah Museum of Art includes risks arising from possible exposure to communicable diseases, including COVID-19. You knowingly and voluntarily accept this risk and assume full responsibility for any injury, illness or other loss that you may sustain as a result.
Visitor Etiquette
Our members and frequent visitors to the Katonah Museum of Art will be familiar with the following rules, designed to make your visit enjoyable and to protect the artwork, as well as our guests. Please help us by following these guidelines.
- Please keep a distance of at least three feet from the artworks. Do not touch any artwork at any time
- For the current exhibition, informal photography for your personal use is permitted in the galleries. Flash is not permitted.
- Please silence your phone and, if you must take a call, exit the gallery and do so in the Sculpture Garden.
- Food, drink, chewing gum and tobacco products are not allowed in the galleries.
- Please leave large bags or backpacks in your car, as we cannot accommodate them in the galleries at this time.
- Do not carry children on shoulders.
- Strollers are allowed in the galleries, but they must be pushed by adults at all times.
- We ask that children younger than 12 be supervised by an adult at all times.
The Katonah Museum of Art is a non-collecting institution geared towards visual arts, located in Katonah, New York. The Museum presents changing exhibitions that cross a spectrum of artistic disciplines, cultures, and historical periods. Housed in an elegant building designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes, and accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the Katonah Museum of Art originates three to four major exhibitions annually.
With each exhibition, artists, curators, and other specialists present art through programs, lectures, and workshops designed for visitors of all ages. The Pollack Family Learning Center uses a visual and interactive environment that encourages children and their parents to participate in hands-on projects. The Katonah Museum also offers outdoor concerts, evening cocktail parties, international travels, and trips to other museums and private collections. An outdoor Sculpture Garden, shaded by towering pines, displays contemporary works.
From the beginning, the KMA was committed to presenting exceptional art from all cultures and time periods. The founders’ decision to be a non-collecting institution resulted in a dynamic and flexible exhibition program, which remains one of the most distinctive features of the Museum. The KMA offers lectures, films, workshops, concerts and other events for a general audience; and presents innovative and substantive programs for nearly 100 member schools and community organizations. The Museum's outreach programs for the local Latino immigrant population are at the forefront of community-based education programs.
Its exhibitions, events, and educational programs invite everyone to experience and reflect on the impact and transformative power of the visual arts.
